Practicing Gender and Practicing Medicine:
‘Tradition' and‘modernity' in post-colonial Hong Kong
Individuals constantly negotiate their identitiesin fluid social environments, and gender is an integral part of this negotiation .As Hong Kong flounders in a postcolonial transformation, its women doctors strive to anchor themselves between tradition and modernity .They find themselvesin a dilemma:while medicine is considered “modern” and “masculine” , as women they must manifest “ traditional” and “ feminine” qualities . Together with classidentity and occupational hierarchy , gender negotiations have reinforced their individual helplessness, and have reproduced a male-centered work system and a patriarchal ideology .The paper concludes that gender is both ideology and praxis. As such, it is important that researchers must historicize and contextualize , and through analyzing the interaction between gender difference and individual agency , seek to understand the relationship between gender and culture.
