In this article , the understanding process of the developing road of social w elfare in Western industial society is analy sed and commented from the aspects of economic sociology and developmental sociology .Firstly , we trace the changing process in the economists' and sociolog ists' minds on understanding how social change has effected social welfare .Secondly ,w e offer a new ex planation on the meaning , nature and changing tendency of social w elfare and make a further discussion on the relationship between social welfare and its sustainable development .By comparing the different ideas on sustainable development w e finally draw such a conclusion that it is urgent and unavoidable for social w elfare to be developed in a sustainable w ay .
