The Vicissitude of Marriage Payments and the Equilibrium of Power in Affinal Relationships:A case study in Q county of Liaoning province

本文考察了20世纪40年代以来辽东Q镇婚姻支付制度的变迁,其中包括婆家与娘家婚姻支付的内容及其流向变化。Q镇的个案说明,婚姻支付的持续上涨不仅是个体性和夫妻关系的增强,它还被视为一种传统的文化资源和社会资源,为娘家所沿用和拓展,并日益发展成为谋求姻亲秩序的重要途径。娘家利用了婚姻支付的变迁,争取了与新建立家庭的联系,达成了与婆家地位平等的谋划,进而强化了姻亲关系在民间社会中的重要作用。

This article is a case study based on the fieldwork in Q county of Liaoning Province , and it probes into the changing practice of marital payments since 1940s.The case reveals that escalating payments means the rise of individuality as well as conjugality . Moreover, as a kind of traditional cultural and social recourses, marital payments tend to be utilized to pursue the equilibrium of power in affinal relationships by bride' s family . What is more important isthat bride' s family makes use of marital payments to reconstruct affinal order, which enforcesthe relationships between bride' sfamily and the new couple , with the result that affinity plays an important role in local folk society.
