This article explores three attempts by the sociology of religion to go beyond the classical secularization theory :the religious economies model based on rational choice theory , the new secularization theory centered on multidimensional analy sis and deinstitutionalization, and the study of multiple religious modernities conducted by

comparing the interactions between religion, culture and politics taking place in various
