Risk Society and China:A dialogue with Ulrich Beck

这次对话集中讨论了风险社会的诸多特性,如启蒙功能(开启各种替代性现代性的空间)、沟通性的世界主义逻辑(全球语境下的公共协商)及想象的世界主义共同体(通过大众传媒消解想象的“他者”)。正在经历“压缩的现代化”的中国面临着第一现代性和第二现代性"双重强制"的共时性困境,风险社会或许能够提供一种替代性的社会图景。风险社会通过相互依附性催生了新的革命性力量,并赋权了国家和公民行动。对于社会研究而言,风险社会的意义在于帮助我们了解“方法论国家主义”的局限而代之以“方法论的世界主义”,从而推动社会科学的世界主义范式转换。

This dialogue discusses characteristics of risk society， such as the enlightenment function ( opening up the possibilities of alternative modernity)，the communicative cosmopolitan logic of global risk ( public deliberation in the global context) and a cosmopolitan imagined community (dissolving the global “other” via mass media). Going through a“compressed modernization”，China is currently experiencing the predicament of a synchronic coercion from the first and the second modernities，to which risk society might possibly provide a solution of“alternative social imagination”. Through interconnectedness risk society breeds revolutionary forces and empowers state and civil society alike. Finally，for social studies，risk society reveals the internal limits of “methodological nationalism”， in the replacement of which there arises a “methodological cosmopolitanism”，thereby leading to a cosmopolitan paradigm shift in social sciences research.
